Perched proudly on a forested ridge overlooking the entire valley floor is the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goenpa). As the largest Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan, this historic complex is a masterpiece of traditional woodwork and spiritual heritage. The Sacred Black-Necked Cranes: Heavenly Messengers
What makes this region truly legendary is the annual arrival of the endangered Black-Necked Cranes. Every autumn, these majestic birds fly across the high Himalayas from Tibet to spend their winter in the safety of Phobjikha’s marshes. Local folklore holds a beautiful belief: upon arrival and departure, the cranes circle Gangtey Monastery three times clockwise in mid-air, as if performing a sacred Buddhist kora (circumambulation) to bless the valley for a prosperous season.
